Each time you think Game Of Thrones has mastered its craft, reached the pinnacle of TV and set the bar so high it can't be topped... BANG. The whole thing explodes in a fresh new direction.
Season 6 has provided a deluge of answers to long-running mysteries, added enormous weight to game-changing theories and gleefully chopped the cast down to a manageable size. It really has been a sensational period for the show.
But with (only) three episodes left to go, Westeros is hardly a neat and orderly place to be right now. The capital is engaged in a stunningly tense meltdown, the North is revolting, while the Hound is back with a reason to kill and an axe to help him carry out the deeds.
Episode 8 'No One' should feature a 'conclusion' to Arya's mind-bending spell in Braavos, Episode 9 'The Battle of the Bastards' will be the Jon vs. Ramsay showdown fans are craving to see, while the events from Episode 10 'The Winds of Winter' are a complete mystery, with one inevitability. Tears.
So much needs to happen before the long break, but will fans be left satisfied at the end of Season 6? These 10 aspects simply must go down.
10. Melisandre's Secrets Revealed
One of the very first scenes that sent jaws hurtling to Earth was Melisandre's revelation. She removed her necklace and the illusion dropped. She's seen as a withered old woman and so far there's no reason why.
Melisandre has barely featured considering how much was expected of her in Season 6. Yes, she brought the main character back from the dead and put him on course to reclaim the entire North back for the Stark family, but her screen time has been limited.
Who knows whether the answer is important, but there has to be a reason for Melisandre's transformation. Will Season 6 provide the reason?
9. Margaery Shows True Colours
Margaery is still one of the finest players of the game in Westeros and beyond. She's a cool customer who has arguably outgrown her own grandmother who taught her the art of pure deception.
She seems to have successfully deceived the High Sparrow and is presumably waiting for an opportune moment to strike him down, but things can't be that simple.
Whatever Margaery's fate is, she must reveal her true colours by the end of the season or risk playing the part of 'innocent member of the Faith' too well.
8. Jaime And Brienne Reunion
Everybody loves a reunion. None could be sweeter right now than Jon seeing Sansa for the first time since the very first season but Jaime coming face to face with Brienne would be a close second.
That's exactly what looks set to happen. Brienne is en route to Riverrun to rally the Tully troops to Jon's cause, while Jaime is embarking on a potentially fruitless siege.
Brienne's mission could be the catalyst for the Blackfish leaving his castle and heading North. It would be a safe way to draw the storyline to a close without bloodshed, although this is Thrones we're talking about.
7. Cersei Kills The High Sparrow
The High Sparrow has been a wild success in terms of villainy. I doubt many were expecting Jonathan Pryce to be in such a commanding position at this point, but there he is, puppeteering the realm with a flutter of his rags.
Cersei is obviously defiant even in her lowest ebb, but a return to the top would coincide with the death of the High Sparrow, though it wouldn't be the end of the matter.
While Margaery's loyalties are murky, Tommen genuinely believes the Faith are the way forward. Cersei killing the Sparrow could lead to an incredibly messy situation with her son, but isn't that what Thrones is meant to offer?
6. The Mountain Vs. The Hound
Cersei's trial by combat has been a simmering side-story for a while now but it all seems far too quiet to play a huge part in the final few episodes.
It feels a lot like a curveball is coming, but if a combatant is chosen to go against the Mountain, it simply must be the new-found Hound.
THAT is his purpose for returning. THAT is the reason the gods spared him on numerous occasions. However, it seems like a long shot for Sandor to make it back to King's Landing in time. Still, if the trial happens in Season 6, so too should the brotherly showdown.
5. Ironborn Meet Daenerys
Daenerys needs ships. The Ironborn have ships. Daenerys is returning to Meereen. The Ironborn are heading to Meereen. A meeting must happen, and it must happen in Season 6.
If next season is to be the final outing for Thrones, Daenerys must spend a whole season on the continent at least, so finally it appears that the Mother of Dragons will be kicking off her voyage across the Narrow Sea.
Euron Greyjoy's appearances have been scarce considering how important his people may be, so expect to see a rise to prominence in the final few episodes of the season.
4. Tyrion Unleashes The Dragons
Tyrion has been a forgotten figure in Season 6. His scenes have been delivered impeccably but in small bites when fans really want to see Peter Dinklage flexing his political muscles and scathing wit on a more regular basis.
His storyline is currently tied to that of the dragons beneath Meereen. He is their closest ally right now and their situation hasn't changed all season. That must change.
Tyrion unshackled the beasts but if the Harpy rise up once again or the Ironborn do approach the city, a pair of dragons could be crucial, and could form the final piece of Daenerys' all-conquering plan.
3. Arya Finishes Up In Braavos
It's time to accept the fact that Arya's journey in Braavos has run its course. Her early episodes with the Faceless Men were unappealing, and while Season 6 has certainly picked up, it still seems entirely separate to the main Westeros plot.
It's about time the youngest Stark girl heads home, particularly if she catches wind of Jon reclaiming the North for their House.
Before she can board a ship back to the homeland she must end the Waif. It seems nigh-on impossible that she can eliminate Jaqen H'ghar, but the Waif isn't infallible. Kill the Waif, head on home. Easy, right? Right?
2. Jon Butchers Ramsay
Each season Ramsay appears it appears to be his last. The same can be said of Season 6, but SURELY this time he can't wriggle out of it?
Jon must take back Winterfell, and when he does so, there can't be any mercy, just a glorious death. The detailed description of how Ramsay intended to kill Jon could be inflicted upon the new Bolton himself, but it feels like Jon would opt for a Ned-like approach.
If the citizens of the North were in any doubt over who Jon really is, passing the sentence and swinging the sword in Ned-like fashion would seem like a fitting way to win the hearts of those who haven't already subscribed the idea of a new Stark.
1. Tower Of Joy
We've seen the first half, so there's no way Season 6 can pass by without the rest of the Tower of Joy sequence playing out for us.
The flashback from Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven got the ball rolling with Ned & Co. going up against the Targaryen guards, but the whole story wasn't complete.
The final scene of the entire season must be the revelation to follow on from that tale. The R+L=J theory must be confirmed. Once that goes down, the scene is set for a world-altering shift and a truly sensational home straight for the show.
